| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent News Release – Troop D April 1, 2010 Operation Lifesaver Enforcement Detail in Calcasieu Parish SULPHUR – Today, Louisiana State Police Troop D and the Union Pacific Railroad Police conducted a railroad crossing enforcement detail on LA Highway 108 south of Sulphur. Troopers and officers were looking for drivers who ignored railroad crossing warning signals as a train approached. During today’s detail, violations were videotaped and a total of 28 citations were issued. Additional enforcement details are being planned for the Troop D area. Last year, 11 people in Louisiana lost their lives in vehicle crashes with trains. This was the sixth highest number of such fatalities in the nation. Louisiana state law requires motorists to obey signals at railroad crossings that indicate an approaching train including flashing red lights and lowered gates. Failure to obey these signals may result in a $200.00 fine and 30 days in jail for a first offense with higher fines and increased jail time for additional violations. The fine for racing a train is $1,000. Contact Information: | |||
