Edmonson, Superintendent News Release January 8, 2009 Fatality Crash in Calcasieu Parish On January 8, 2009 at 6:33 AM, Louisiana State Police – Troop D investigated a six-vehicle, fatality crash on LA 27 at mile post 80 (South of Sulphur) in Calcasieu Parish. The crash occurred when a 2006 Chevrolet pick-up truck, driven by 31- year-old Gene A. Constance of Sulphur, LA was north on LA 27. A 2004 Pontiac Vibe, driven by 70-year-old Edward H. Marecek of Sulphur, LA was stopped at the intersection due to traffic congestion. Constance failed to stop his pick-up truck and struck the rear of Marecek’s Pontiac Vibe. Marecek’s Pontiac Vibe then struck a third vehicle in the rear, a 2007 Ford pick-up truck, driven by 61-year-old, William L. Greenhaw of Sulphur, LA. Greenhaw’s Ford pick-up truck struck a fourth vehicle in the rear, a 2005 GMC pick-up truck, driven by 30-year-old, Curtis W. Higginbotham of Lake Charles, LA. Higginbotham’s GMC Pick-up truck struck a fifth vehicle in the rear, a 2008 Ford Expedition, driven by 72-year-old, Sterling P. Williams of Sulphur, LA. Williams’ Ford Expedition struck a sixth vehicle, a 1997 Nissan pick-up truck in the rear, driven by 42-year-old William P. Williams of Sulphur, LA. As a result of injuries suffered in the crash, driver in the 2004 Pontiac Vibe, Edward H. Marecek of Sulphur, LA was transported to West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital and pronounced deceased at the hospital. All occupants in the crash were wearing seatbelts. Impairment is unknown; however, routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. For More Information contact: | |||
