News Release – Troop D October 28, 2011 Teenager seriously injured in Calcasieu Parish crash Iowa, LA–On Friday, October 28, 2011, at approximately 5:58 p.m., troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 3059 east of Man Heyd Road in Calcasieu Parish that seriously injured an Iowa teenager. Investigating troopers report that a 2001 Mercedes driven by 17-year-old Mercedez Felice Rios-Garcia of Iowa was traveling east on LA 3059 when the vehicle she was driving traveled off the south side of the road. Rios-Garcia then overcorrected to the left, lost control, and struck a culvert on the north side of the road. The vehicle then went airborne and flipped before landing. Rios-Garcia, who was not wearing a seatbelt, received serious injuries and was initially transported to a local hospital. She has since been transported to a Houston hospital in critical condition. A teenage passenger in the vehicle, who was wearing a seatbelt, received moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Alcohol or drug use is not suspected. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Rios-Garcia and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana state law requires all vehicle occupants to wear a seatbelt. Wearing a seatbelt is the single most effective thing motorists can do to reduce their chances of being hurt in a crash.
