Jennings woman arrested for extorting money from elderly man

Jennings—Today, detectives with the Louisiana State Police (LSP) Bureau of Investigations arrested a woman from Jennings for extorting an elderly man out of over $20,000.

On September 20, 2011, the Lake Charles field office of the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations was contacted by the Lake Charles office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in reference to an extortion case.

Federal agents received information that 27-year-old Brooke Cormier of Jennings was calling an elderly man in the Jennings area and claiming that she was wrongfully arrested and charged with prostitution. On various occasions she called the victim and claimed to be a judge, FBI special agent, or with the district attorney’s office. The victim gave Cormier over $20,000 in cash in the last 2 months.

On September 22, 2011, Cormier contacted the victim and requested $1,900 to pay fictitious fines imposed by a fictitious judge. A joint undercover operation involving the FBI and LSP was initiated and the victim delivered the money under the watchful eye of investigators.

After delivery of the money, Cormier was arrested for extortion, theft over $500, and false personation of a police officer. Cormier admitted to the scheme and during a subsequent search of her residence, troopers discovered a small quantity of marijuana and prescription pills. Cormier was also charged with possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Cormier was booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail.
