Motorcycle Crash Kills DeQuincy Man

DEQUINCY—Last night, at approximately 9:47 p.m., troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 27 south of DeQuincy in Calcasieu Parish that claimed the life of a DeQuincy man.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2001 Honda motorcycle driven by 26-year-old John Fruge of DeQuincy was traveling south on Highway 27 when he attempted to pass an 18-wheeler that was also traveling south. Fruge failed to observe a northbound 2003 Ford pickup approaching in the north lane of the two-lane highway. Both drivers then veered toward the east shoulder but did not avoid the crash.

Fruge was totally ejected from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office. Fruge was wearing a motorcycle helmet.

The driver of the Ford pickup, 41-year-old Preston Franklin of DeQuincy, was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash. Franklin was charged with driving under suspension.

Alcohol and drug use is not suspected to be a factor. A toxicology sample was obtained from the drivers and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Inattentive and distracted driving is the cause of many crashes in Louisiana. Information on distracted driving may be found online at www.distraction.gov.
