TROOP D NEWS RELEASE October 22, 2014 State Trooper Saves Life after Crash in Beauregard Parish DeRidder - Shortly after noon on October 17, 2014, Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a minor two vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 171 at Louisiana Highway 26 near DeRidder. One of the drivers involved in the crash, 73-year-old Derwood Causey of DeRidder, suffered a heart attack as the crash was being investigated. The trooper investigating the crash, Trooper First Class Ronnie Picou, observed that Causey was not breathing and had only a faint pulse. Picou administered CPR continuously for 8 minutes before being relieved by a nurse and her husband as well as a paramedic who stopped to assist. Acadian Ambulance responded to the scene and transported Causey to a Lake Charles hospital. At last report Causey is doing well and is expected to recover. One of the responding paramedics later contacted the commander of Troop D and stated that Causey would not have survived without the lifesaving efforts of Trooper Picou. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, commonly known as CPR, is an emergency procedure performed in an effort to manually preserve brain function until further measures are taken to restore blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest. The Louisiana State Police encourages everyone to learn CPR. Information on CPR training may be obtained from various organizations including the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. | |||
