Jefferson Davis Parish – A Texas woman involved in a two-vehicle crash last month has succumbed to her injuries. On February 20, 2019, shortly after 9:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash occurred on US Hwy 165 south of Carl Hoppe Road in Jefferson Davis Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by 95-year-old Mildred C. Powell of Beaumont Texas was traveling north on US Hwy 165 prior to the crash. For unknown reasons, Powell struck the rear of a 28-foot camper trailer being pulled by a 2003 Ford pickup truck driven by 40-year-old Moses Martinez of Opelousas. Powell’s vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and came to rest in a ditch. Both drivers were properly restrained, but Powell was transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for moderate injuries sustained during the crash. On February 27, 2019, Powell succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash. The crash remains under investigation. Troop D has investigated 2 fatal crashes resulting in 2 deaths in 2019.
