Unrestrained Port Arthur Woman Succumbs to Injuries Received in Crash

Calcasieu Parish – A woman from Port Arthur, Texas, has succumbed to injuries sustained in a four-vehicle crash earlier this month.

Shortly after 6:00 p.m. on December 11, 2018, Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a four-vehicle crash on I-10 Eastbound four miles from the Texas state line. The initial investigation revealed a 2013 Ford pickup truck driven by 30-year-old Tony Lejeune of Vinton was traveling east on I-10 when Lejeune encountered slow-moving traffic due to congestion. The pickup truck he was driving struck the rear of a 2011 Lexus sedan driven by 74-year-old Be Van Pham of Port Arthur, Texas, causing a chain reaction crash involving two additional vehicles.

Lejeune was not injured. Occupants of other vehicles received minor to moderate injuries while an unrestrained passenger in the Lexus, 62-year-old Thi My Tran of Port Arthur, Texas, sustained serious injuries and was transported from the scene by helicopter to a Beaumont area hospital. On the morning of December 27, 2018, Tran succumbed to her injuries and died at the hospital.

Impairment on the part of Lejeune is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis. Lejeune was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center on charges of DWI, careless operation, and first degree vehicular negligent injury. Additional charges are pending and the crash remains under investigation.

The Louisiana State police will continue to arrest any motorist found to be operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. To report impaired drivers, motorists are urged to dial *LSP (*577) or to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Troop D has investigated 30 fatal crashes resulting in 30 deaths in 2018.
