TROOP D NEWS RELEASE May 21, 2019 Lake Charles Man Succumbs to Injuries Received in Two-Vehicle Crash Calcasieu Parish – On May 14, 2019, shortly after 4:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 about 2 miles west of Westlake. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2012 Toyota Camry driven by 27-year-old Priyankabahen R. Patel of Lake Charles was traveling west on I-10 when Patel encountered slow-moving traffic due to congestion. The Toyota she was driving struck the rear of a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta driven by 89-year-old John D. Weaver of Lake Charles. The impact caused Patel to lose control of her vehicle, run off the right side of the roadway, and came to rest in the right side median. Weaver, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a Lake Charles area hospital for medical treatment. Patel was properly restrained, but was transported to a Lake Charles area hospital for minor injuries sustained during the crash. Patel was cited for careless operation. On May 15, 2019, Troop D was notified by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office that John D. Weaver had succumbed to his injuries sustained during the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
