Unrestrained Baton Rouge Man Dies in Allen Parish Crash

ALLEN PARISH — An unrestrained Baton Rouge man died this morning near Kinder after the vehicle he was a passenger in traveled into the path of another vehicle.

On June 29, 2018, shortly after 9:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 165 at Clyde Chachere Road north of Kinder. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2008 Pontiac G6 driven by 21-year-old Esperanza Cortina of Eunice was traveling east on Clyde Chachere Road when she stopped at a stop sign at US 165. She then proceeded east and failed to yield at a yield sign near the center of the divided highway driving into the path of a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado traveling north on US 165. As a result, the Chevrolet struck the passenger side of the Pontiac.

A backseat passenger in the Pontiac, 40-year-old Bryan Keith Smith of Baton Rouge, was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Two other passengers in the Pontiac were transported from the scene with moderate injuries. Cortina received minor injuries. None of them were wearing a seat belt.

The driver and passenger in the Chevrolet Silverado were wearing a seat belt and received minor injuries.

A toxicology sample was obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.

In the event of a crash, choosing not to wear a seat belt can have deadly consequences. Unfortunately, some people don’t get this message until it’s too late. Louisiana state law requires motorists to be properly restrained in every seating position, day or night.

In 2018, Troop D has investigated 14 fatal crashes resulting in 14 deaths.
