TROOP D NEWS RELEASE May 7, 2018 Unrestrained Breaux Bridge Man Killed in ATV Crash JEFFERSON DAVIS PARISH — A construction worker operating an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) was killed this morning when he traveled into the path of another vehicle near Jennings. On May 7, 2018, shortly before 6:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on the I-10 South Frontage Road just west of Jennings in Jefferson Davis Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed a Polaris Ranger ATV operated by 27-year-old Drake James Scrantz of Breaux Bridge attempted to enter the I-10 South Frontage Road from an adjacent median when he was struck by a westbound Dodge pickup truck driven by 55-year-old Gregory Romero of Eagan. At the time of the crash, Scrantz was attempting to return to a construction yard after conducting road work operations nearby. Scrantz, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the ATV and died as a result of his injuries. Romero was properly restrained and was not injured. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. The ATV Scrantz was operating was equipped with seat belts. Evidence at the scene indicates wearing a seat belt could have made a difference. Motorists are encouraged to make the smart choice and to wear a seat belt whenever one is available, day or night. In 2018, Troop D has investigated 10 fatal crashes resulting in 10 deaths. Contact Information: Sgt.
