TROOP D NEWS RELEASE March 10, 2018 Troopers Arrest Lake Charles Man for Fourth Offense DWI LAKE CHARLES — A Lake Charles man was arrested for fourth offense DWI and other charges this morning after he was observed driving in the middle of the highway. On March 10, 2018, shortly before 5:00 a.m., a Trooper assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop D observed a 2009 Ford Expedition driving left of center straddling the center line on US Highway 90 east of Lake Charles. The Trooper stopped the vehicle and upon contact with the driver, 42-year-old Trandy J. Nelson of Lake Charles, observed obvious signs of impairment as well as an open can of beer. Nelson initially cooperated then refused to cooperate and began to walk away. After a brief struggle, Nelson was placed under arrest and transported to Troop D. After arrival at Troop D, Nelson refused to provide a breath sample. A “no refusal” search warrant was obtained and blood was subsequently drawn from Nelson at a local hospital for analysis. Nelson was charged with DWI fourth offense, resisting an officer, open alcoholic beverage container, driving under suspension, driving left of center, and illegal window tint. Nelson was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center. Bond was set at $27,250. In 2015, 64 percent of people who died in crashes investigated by Troop D were killed by an impaired driver. Motorists who observe impaired drivers are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) to reach the nearest Louisiana State Police troop location or to dial 911 to contact local law enforcement.
