TROOP D NEWS RELEASE August 21, 2018 Seat Belt and Sobriety Checkpoint Scheduled for Calcasieu Parish CALCASIEU PARISH - In an effort to increase seat belt usage and combat impaired driving in our area, Louisiana State Police Troop D plans to conduct a seat belt compliance and DWI checkpoint on Thursday, August 23, 2018, from approximately 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location in Calcasieu Parish. Our mission will be to ticket vehicle occupants who are not properly restrained or choose not to properly restrain children in the vehicle as well as to remove impaired drivers from the highway before they cause injury or death to themselves or others. Louisiana state law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in all seating positions, day and night. Additionally, wearing a seat belt is the simplest and most effective thing motorists can do to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to make the smart choice and wear a seat belt on every trip, every time. Alcohol consumption affects driver judgement and the skills needed to drive safely. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and designate a sober driver before driving to any place where alcohol will be consumed. Not doing so can have deadly consequences. To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone to contact the nearest Louisiana State Police troop location or to contact local law enforcement.
