TROOP D NEWS RELEASE
July 7, 2021
Roll-Over Crash Kills Man in Calcasieu Parish

Lake Charles On July 7, 2021, shortly after 4:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D was notified of a single-vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 10 Westbound about 3 miles east of Lake Charles. The crash claimed the life of 28-year-old Carl Miller, Jr. of Jennings.

The preliminary investigation revealed Miller was traveling west on I-10 during a rain storm in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado. Miller lost control of his vehicle and traveled off the roadway through a guardrail and down an embankment. His vehicle came to rest on its roof submerged in a drainage ditch. Although Miller was properly restrained, he suffered fatal injuries due to the severity of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office.

Excessive speed for prevailing weather conditions is suspected to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample will be collected and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana state law requires motorists to drive at a speed that is safe for prevailing weather conditions and to reduce speed if necessary when hazardous driving conditions exist such as rain or fog. Doing so can mean the difference between a safe trip or one that ends in tragedy.

Troop D has investigated 17 fatal crashes resulting in 17 deaths in 2021.
