TROOP D NEWS RELEASE State Police Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Jefferson Davis Parish JEFFERSON DAVIS PARISH – On November 27, 2019, the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations was requested by the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDPSO) to investigate a shooting incident involving their deputies. The preliminary investigation revealed the incident occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m. as JDPSO Deputies and a State Trooper assigned to Troop D responded to a report of shots fired inside a residence. The residence is located off of Louisiana Highway 101 north of the community of Lacassine. Shortly after arrival, responding officers encountered 56-year-old Jeffery Smiley holding a weapon outside the residence. Smiley was directed to drop the weapon but refused. At least one deputy discharged his weapon striking Smiley. Smiley was transported to Lafayette General Hospital for treatment of his injuries. No other injuries were reported.
