Unrestrained Speeding Driver Dies in Allen Parish Crash

OBERLIN, LA – A single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a man from Mamou this morning.

On October 18, 2015, shortly before 6:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 26 about 6 ½ miles east of Oberlin in Allen Parish. The initial investigation revealed a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling east on LA 26 and entered a curve when the driver, 25-year-old Cody Hammon of Mamou, lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle traveled off the road and struck a tree.

Hammon was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected through the windshield. Hammon was pronounced dead at the scene.

Excessive speed is suspected to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was obtained from Hammon and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law requires vehicle occupants to be restrained in all seating positions, day and night. Wearing a seat belt on every trip, whether it’s short or long, is the most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice and to wear their seat belt.

Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway. Speeding also extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle and can lead to a more serious collision in cases where the vehicle strikes another object. Troopers encourage motorists to observe the speed limit and to drive at a speed that is safe for prevailing road and weather conditions.

Troop D has investigated 26 fatal crashes resulting in 28 fatalities this year.
