TROOP D NEWS RELEASE October 18, 2015 Unrestrained Speeding Driver Dies in Allen Parish Crash OBERLIN, LA – A single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a man from Mamou this morning. On October 18, 2015, shortly before 6:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 26 about 6 ½ miles east of Oberlin in Allen Parish. The initial investigation revealed a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling east on LA 26 and entered a curve when the driver, 25-year-old Cody Hammon of Mamou, lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle traveled off the road and struck a tree. Hammon was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected through the windshield. Hammon was pronounced dead at the scene. Excessive speed is suspected to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was obtained from Hammon and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway. Speeding also extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle and can lead to a more serious collision in cases where the vehicle strikes another object. Troopers encourage motorists to observe the speed limit and to drive at a speed that is safe for prevailing road and weather conditions. Troop D has investigated 26 fatal crashes resulting in 28 fatalities this year. | |||
