TROOP D NEWS RELEASE

December 14, 2015
Seat belt and Sobriety Checkpoint Scheduled for Calcasieu Parish

LAKE CHARLES, LA - In an effort to increase seat belt usage and combat impaired driving in our area, Louisiana State Police Troop D plans to conduct a seat belt compliance and DWI checkpoint on Thursday, December 17, 2015, from approximately 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location in Calcasieu Parish. Our mission will be to ticket vehicle occupants who are not properly restrained or who choose not to properly restrain children in the vehicle as well as to remove impaired drivers from the highway before they cause injury or death to themselves or others.

The nationwide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign begins Wednesday, December 16th, and lasts until January 1, 2016. Troopers will increase DWI enforcement activities during this time.

During the 2013 holiday enforcement period (December 18-31) there were 1,180 people killed in crashes on our nation's roads. Almost a third (30%) of those fatalities occurred in drunk-driving crashes. On Christmas Day, 23 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes.

To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Louisiana state law requires vehicle occupants in all seating positions to be properly restrained, day and night. Children who require a child safety seat should be properly restrained in an age and weight appropriate restraint.

Support for this checkpoint and for additional DWI apprehension patrols is provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
