TROOP D NEWS RELEASE September 21, 2015 Motorcyclist Fatally Injured in Calcasieu Parish WESTLAKE, LA – A man from New Mexico died this morning after the motorcycle he was operating was struck head-on. On September 21, 2015, shortly after 10:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a three-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on Louisiana Highway 378 north of Westlake in Calcasieu Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 44-year-old Tracy Jones of Sulphur was traveling north on LA 378 behind another vehicle when Jones crossed the center line of the highway and struck the vehicle in front of her in the left rear corner. The Tahoe Jones was driving continued traveling on the wrong side of the highway and struck a southbound 2009 Yamaha motorcycle operated by 67-year-old Paul A. Vaughn of Albuquerque, New Mexico, head-on. Vaughn was ejected from the motorcycle and was transported to a Lake Charles hospital where he was pronounced dead. Jones and the driver of the vehicle struck from behind were wearing seat belts and not injured. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from all drivers and will be submitted for analysis. Jones was charged with driving left of center as well as driving with a suspended driver’s license. The crash remains under investigation and additional charges are possible. Troop D has investigated 22 fatal crashes resulting in 23 deaths this year. Five of those who died were operating a motorcycle. | |||
