TROOP D NEWS RELEASE January 17, 2016 Houston Man Dies in Crash on I-10 in Calcasieu Parish WESTLAKE, LA – A Texas man is dead following a three-vehicle crash near Westlake last night. On January 16, 2015, shortly after 6:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a three-vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 10 about 1 mile west of Louisiana Highway 378 near Westlake in Calcasieu Parish. The initial investigation revealed a 1999 GMC pickup truck was traveling east on I-10 when the GMC traveled off of the roadway, across the center median, and into the westbound lanes of travel. The GMC was struck by an Allegro motor home and then by an 18-wheeler. The GMC and motor home were severely damaged as a result of the crash. The driver of the GMC, 54-year-old Byron Keith Bob of Houston, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office. The other drivers were not injured. All drivers were wearing seat belts. The roadway was wet from rain and excessive speed for the prevailing weather conditions is suspected to be a factor in the crash. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway. Speeding also extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle and can lead to a more serious collision in cases where the vehicle strikes another object. Troopers encourage motorists to observe the speed limit and to drive at a speed that is safe for prevailing road and weather conditions. This is the first fatal crash investigated by Troop D this year. | |||
