Impairment Suspected in Deadly Head-On Crash

CALCASIEU PARISH, LA – A head-on crash this morning north of Sulphur left two people dead and another seriously injured.

On Saturday, January 30, 2016, shortly after 4:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 27 north of Houston River Road. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2005 Chevrolet Impala was traveling north on LA 27 when the driver, 22-year-old Alejandro Delgado of Sulphur, crossed the centerline of the highway in a no passing zone. The Chevrolet then collided with a southbound 2011 Kia Sorento head-on.

The driver of the Kia, 26-year-old Michael Maddox, and the passenger, 27-year-old Amber Borel, both from Dry Creek, were seriously injured and transported to an area hospital. Maddox succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Delgado was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office.

Alcohol use is suspected to be a factor in the crash and toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Last year, 64 percent of fatal crashes investigated by Troop D involved an impaired driver. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and designate a sober driver before going to any place where alcohol will be consumed. Not doing so can have deadly consequences.

To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Troop D has investigated 2 fatal crashes resulting in 3 deaths this year.
