TROOP D NEWS RELEASE March 29, 2016 Unrestrained Teenager Dies in Allen Parish Crash ALLEN PARISH, LA – A teenager died this afternoon as the result of a single-vehicle crash about 5 miles south of Oakdale. On March 29, 2016, shortly after 2:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 372 south of Oakdale. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 Chevrolet Impala driven by 17-year-old Derek Armando Dejesus of Oakdale was traveling north on LA 372 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle he was driving traveled off the roadway and struck a driveway. After striking the driveway, the vehicle flipped causing Dejesus to be ejected. Dejesus, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Allen Parish Coroner’s Office. Investigating Troopers report Dejesus would have likely survived the crash had he been wearing a seat belt. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Dejesus and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana law requires motorists to wear a seat belt in every seating position, front seat and back seat, day and night. Wearing a seat belt is the most effective thing vehicle occupants can do to minimize the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to make the smart choice and to always wear their seat belt. So far this year, Troop D has investigated 12 fatal crashes resulting in 16 deaths. | |||
