TROOP A NEWS RELEASE June 30, 2015 Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Vehicle in Iberville Parish Crash Plaquemine, LA – Shortly before 4:00 am on June 30, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA 1 north of LA 992-3 near Plaquemine. The crash took the life of 66 year old Gene Ellis of Plaquemine, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Ellis was attempting cross LA 1 from the east side of the roadway. At the same time, 31 year old Jeremy Gulotta of Plaquemine, LA was traveling southbound on LA 1 in a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. As Ellis was crossing the southbound lane of LA 1, he was struck by the front bumper of Gulotta’s vehicle. Ellis sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is suspected to be a factor on the part of Ellis. A toxicology sample was taken from Ellis and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Gulotta was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was not injured. Gulotta was given a chemical breath test for intoxication registering no detectable signs of impairment. Louisiana State Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the roadway. Pedestrians must assume that approaching motorists cannot see them. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic could help prevent many pedestrian related crashes.
