TROOP D NEWS RELEASE March 23, 2016 Two People Are Dead Following Separate Crashes with Dump Trucks Two people are dead following separate crashes in the Troop D area, each involving a dump truck, which occurred within two hours of each other. One of the crashes occurred in Calcasieu Parish in the community of Moss Bluff and the other occurred in Jefferson Davis Parish near the town of Iowa. MOSS BLUFF, LA – On March 23, 2016, shortly after 10:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 378 Spur near Sutherland Road in Calcasieu Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed a 1997 Toyota Avalon driven by 48-year-old Dwight Amos Dunaway of Sulphur was traveling east when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle he was driving crossed the centerline of the highway. The Toyota struck the rear axle of a westbound Mack dump truck forcefully causing the axle to separate from the dump truck. Dunaway had to be extricated from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office. The driver of the dump truck was transported from the scene with minor injuries. Toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. JEFFERSON DAVIS PARISH, LA – On March 23, 2016, shortly before noon, Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 383 about a mile north of the town of Iowa. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2013 Honda CR-V driven by 53-year-old Kelly Clark of Lake Charles was traveling north on LA 383 when the vehicle she was driving crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 2007 Peterbilt dump truck head-on. Clark had to be extricated from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson Davis Parish Coroner’s Office. The driver of the dump truck was not injured. Impairment on the part of Clark is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
