Unrestrained Lake Charles Woman Dies in Crash on LA 27

CALCASIEU PARISH, LA – One person was killed and another was injured after a pickup truck traveled into the path of a commercial truck this morning north of Sulphur.

On March 21, 2016, shortly before 6 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Sam Dunham Road at Louisiana Highway 27. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2006 GMC Sierra driven by 26-year-old Laura Lee Reeves of Lake Charles was traveling west on Sam Dunham Road. Reeves failed to yield the right-of-way to a commercial truck that was traveling north on LA 27 resulting in a collision.

Reeves, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office. The driver of the commercial truck was wearing a seat belt and was transported to a nearby hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

A toxicology sample was obtained from the drivers and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law requires motorists to wear a seat belt in every seating position, front seat and back seat, day and night. While every crash is not survivable, wearing a seat belt is the most effective thing vehicle occupants can do to minimize the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to make the smart choice and to always wear their seat belt.

Troop D has investigated 9 fatal crashes resulting in 13 fatalities this year. Of the 13 deaths so far this year, 6 have occurred on LA 27 between Sulphur and DeQuincy.
