TROOP D NEWS RELEASE February 29, 2016 Driver Dies after Stopping in Intersection on US 171 MOSS BLUFF, LA – One person was killed and several others injured after a two-vehicle crash in Calcasieu Parish last night. On February 28, 2016, at 8:21 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 171 at East Telephone Road in the community of Moss Bluff. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2012 Toyota Corolla driven by 75-year-old Media Courville of Lake Charles was traveling on East Telephone Road. For unknown reasons, Courville failed to stop at a stop sign and instead stopped in the intersection with US 171. A 2003 Chevrolet ¾ ton pickup truck was traveling north on US 171. The driver, 28-year-old Michelle Maricle of Ragley, was unable to stop in time to avoid crashing into the driver’s side of the Toyota. Courville was transported by air ambulance to a hospital in Lake Charles where she later died. A passenger in the Toyota was transported to a hospital in Lake Charles with moderate injuries. Occupants of the Chevrolet pickup were brought to a hospital in Lake Charles with minor injuries. All occupants were properly restrained. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Troop D has investigated 7 fatal crashes resulting in 10 fatalities this year. | |||
