Two DeQuincy Teenagers are Dead Following Head-On Crash on LA 27

DEQUINCY, LA – Two teenagers from DeQuincy died this morning following a head-on crash about 5 ½ miles south of DeQuincy in Calcasieu Parish.

On February 21, 2016, at 10:32 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a four-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 27 north of Route 66. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up driven by 18-year-old Charlee Smith of DeQuincy was traveling north on LA 27. Smith passed another northbound vehicle in a curve in a no passing zone and struck the side of a southbound utility trailer that was being towed before striking a 2004 Ford F-150 pick-up driven by 17-year-old Lauren Marie Leblanc of DeQuincy head-on in the southbound lane of travel. A fourth vehicle was damaged by debris immediately after the crash.

Smith and Leblanc were pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office. The drivers of the other two vehicles were not injured. All drivers were wearing a seat belt.

A witness reports Smith was speeding and driving aggressively prior to the crash. Routine toxicology samples were obtained for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Troop D has investigated 5 fatal crashes resulting in 8 fatalities this year. Five of those deaths have occurred on LA 27 between Sulphur and DeQuincy.
