Motorcyclist Dies After Being Struck in Two Vehicle Crash in Livingston Parish

Watson, LA At approximately 1:00 pm on July 1, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash that occurred on LA 16 at the intersection of LA 1024 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 68 year old Charles Sons Jr. of Denham Springs, LA.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 46 year old Lisa Meek of Denham Springs was traveling northbound on LA 16 in a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. At the same time, Sons was traveling southbound on LA 16 on a 1997 Honda motorcycle. As Sons was traveling through the intersection of LA 16 at LA 1024, Meek failed to yield and made a left turn into the path of his motorcycle. The vehicles collided in the southbound lane of LA 16.

Despite the fact that Sons was wearing a DOT approved safety helmet, he suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Sons was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash. A toxicology sample was taken from Sons and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Meek was transported to the Livingston Parish Jail and given a chemical breath test for intoxication and showed no detectable signs of impairment. Meek was determined to be at fault in this crash. She was arrested and booked into the Livingston Parish Jail for Negligent Homicide and Careless Operation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that with the upcoming 4th of July holiday, they should expect an increase in vehicle traffic, as well as motorcycle traffic. Motorists should remain vigilant and watch out for motorcycles. Troopers also want to remind motorists to buckle up as they travel this holiday weekend. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Wearing a seat belt greatly reduces the chances of receiving serious injuries in a crash as well.
