Unrestrained Man Dies in Jefferson Davis Parish Crash

Alcohol use and failure to wear a seatbelt are suspected factors that contributed to the death of a man from Jennings this morning after crashing the vehicle he was driving in Jefferson Davis Parish.

On November 28, 2014, at 6:45 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 102 about 2 miles south of Jennings. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1993 Nissan pickup truck was traveling south on LA 102 when the driver, 27-year-old Calvin James Legros, Jr. of Jennings, lost control of the vehicle he was driving. The vehicle traveled off of the highway and struck a concrete culvert causing it to become airborne, overturn, and land in a canal on its roof.

Legros, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson Davis Parish Coroner’s Office.

A toxicology sample was obtained from Legros and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law requires vehicle occupants to be restrained in all seating positions, day and night. Wearing a seat belt on every trip, whether it’s short or long, is the most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice and wear their seatbelt.

Troop D has investigated 17 fatal crashes resulting in 17 fatalities this year.
