Two Unrestrained People Die in Jefferson Davis Parish Crash

LACASSINE, LA – Two people, including a 3-year-old child, are dead following an overnight crash in Jefferson Davis Parish.

On July 13, 2015, at 10:11 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 10 about two miles west of the community of Lacassine in Jefferson Davis Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder was traveling east on Interstate 10 when the vehicle’s right rear tire deflated. The vehicle traveled into the center median and rolled over.

Two unrestrained rear seat passengers, 36-year-old Luis Amilcar Trochez-Ramos of New Orleans and 3-year-old Marbella Funez of Houston, were ejected from the vehicle and died as a result of their injuries.

The driver, 27-year-old Cintia Funez of Houston, was flown to a Lafayette hospital with moderate injuries. The front seat passenger, 29-year-old Heidy Brizuela of Houston, received minor injuries. Both were wearing a seat belt.

A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Funez. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law requires vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in all seating positions, day and night. Wearing a seat belt on every trip, whether it’s short or long, is the most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. Motorists are strongly encouraged to wear a seat belt and to ensure children are properly restrained.

Every Louisiana State Police troop location serves as a child passenger safety fitting station. Troopers are available to inspect car seats, ensure proper installation, and answer questions free of charge. For more information please visit our web site, www.lsp.org.

Troop D has investigated 12 fatal crashes resulting in 13 deaths so far this year.
