TROOP D NEWS RELEASE July 14, 2015 Insurance Fraud Scheme Leads to Multiple Arrests LAKE CHARLES – Several south Louisiana residents were arrested today for their involvement in an insurance fraud scheme. In 2014, Kemper Home Service Group contacted the Louisiana State Police Insurance Fraud Unit and alleged that certain agents in their Lake Charles Union National Insurance office were filing fake claims and keeping the money received in those claims. The majority of the claims were for lightning damage losses to electrical appliances. Kemper Home Service Group suspected that several Union National employees used fabricated lightning affidavits or modified old affidavits to form a basis for these fraudulent claims. Troopers initiated an investigation into the matter and determined illegal fraudulent activity had taken place. In some instances, the policy holder was aware of the fraudulent claims and in others the policy holder was unware of the fraud. The financial impact of this fraud is estimated to be $55,312.95. As a result of the investigation, State Police obtained arrest warrants for nine persons in Calcasieu Parish, Jefferson Davis Parish, and St. John the Baptist Parish for related criminal charges. The following individuals were arrested by Troopers this morning: 1. Florina Thomas, 36, Lake Charles, LA
