State Police Investigates Death of Lake Charles Man

LAKE CHARLES, LA On the afternoon of Thursday, July 23, 2015, Chief Don Dixon of the Lake Charles Police Department (LCPD) requested the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations investigate the death of a Lake Charles man who was out of jail on bond.

The initial investigation revealed on the afternoon of Thursday, July 23, 2015, shortly after 2:00 p.m., two bail bondsmen located 42-year-old Bob Cox of Lake Charles in the 1700 block of 6th Avenue and approached Cox with the intention of revoking his bond. Cox initially cooperated with one of the bondsmen and walked to the bondsman’s vehicle.

According to the bail bondsmen, Cox sat down in the passenger seat as one of the bondsmen walked around to the passenger side of the vehicle and placed one handcuff on him. Before the bondsman could get the second handcuff on, Cox reportedly began to resist, armed himself with a knife, and stated repeatedly that he would not go back to jail.

The bondsmen then called 911 and requested police assistance. Before officers with LCPD arrived, Cox ran from the location.

Upon arrival, LCPD officers witnessed Cox running. Officers gave chase and deployed a department-issued Taser in an effort to stop him. The Taser was effective and Cox fell to the ground face down. As officers were handcuffing him, Cox stated, “I’ve got a knife in me.” Officers turned Cox onto his back and saw a large knife protruding from his chest at which time Acadian Ambulance was contacted. Cox was transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

LCPD is not releasing the names of the officers involved at this time.

No one other than Cox was injured during this incident. The case remains under investigation by the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations.
