TROOP D NEWS RELEASE May 26, 2015 Unrestrained Man Dies Due to Injuries from Crash ELTON, LA – An Elton man died today from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle crash last week. On May 21, 2015, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 395 about a mile south of Elton in Jefferson Davis Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2001 Dodge pickup truck was traveling south on LA 395 when for unknown reasons the truck traveled off of the roadway, struck a ditch, and then flipped. The driver, 67-year-old John H. Sandlin of Elton, was not wearing a seat belt and was transported from the scene with moderate injuries. After the crash Sandlin was charged with DWI, open alcoholic beverage container, careless operation, and no seat belt. Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash and a toxicology sample was obtained from Sandlin. On May 26, 2015, Troop D was notified that Sandlin had died as a result of injuries sustained during the crash. The crash remains under investigation. The nationwide Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign continues through the end of May. Louisiana law requires vehicle occupants to be restrained in all seating positions, day and night. Wearing a seat belt on every trip, whether it’s short or long, is the most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice and to wear a seat belt. Troop D has investigated 11 fatal crashes resulting in 11 deaths this year. | |||
