TROOP D NEWS RELEASE
June 6, 2017
Pursuit Leads to Arrest of Two Men in Sulphur

SULPHUR — Two men, one of them armed, were arrested today after leading State Police on a pursuit in Sulphur.

On June 6, 2017, at 12:23 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop D attempted to stop a 2012 Jeep Liberty for a traffic violation on Louisiana Highway 27 at Burton Street in Sulphur. The driver, later identified as 33-year-old Ronald Etienne, Jr. of Sulphur, refused to stop and attempted to flee on nearby city streets. The pursuit lasted about 4 minutes before Etienne drove into a field and the vehicle became stuck. Etienne and a passenger, later identified as 30-year-old Kendrick Nelson Shepherd of Lake Charles, took off on foot and fled into a nearby wooded area. As Shepherd fled he pulled out a handgun.

Troopers, with assistance from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, Sulphur Police Department, and Lake Charles Police Department, set up a perimeter and actively searched for the men in the area north of US Highway 90 and west of Prater Road. With the help of police canines, both subjects were located and apprehended shortly before 2:00 p.m. Etienne was bitten by a canine while attempting to elude capture and was transported to a hospital in Lake Charles for treatment then released to State Police.

Etienne was charged with aggravated flight from an officer, careless operation, driving left of center, speeding, failure to stop at a stop sign, driving with a suspended driver’s license, and failure to register a motor vehicle. Etienne also had an outstanding arrest warrant through the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Shepherd was charged with resisting an officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and obstruction of justice.

Etienne and Shepherd were both booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center.
