TROOP D NEWS RELEASE May 5, 2017 Troopers Arrest Sulphur Man for Aggravated Assault with a Firearm JEFFERSON DAVIS PARISH — A Sulphur man was arrested this morning after he threatened another motorist with a handgun. The preliminary investigation revealed that on Friday, May 05, 2017, shortly after 6:00 a.m., a motorist in the left lane of I-10 Westbound near Welch approached another motorist who was in the left lane of travel. The motorist in front applied his brakes then moved over. Afterward the motorists were side-by-side, exchanged words, and the driver of the vehicle originally in front produced a handgun and brandished it. Troopers stopped the suspect vehicle on I-10 east of Lake Charles. The driver, 24-year-old Matthew Paul Savoie of Sulphur, initially denied having a handgun in the vehicle. Troopers then searched the vehicle and discovered a handgun matching the description of the handgun provided by the victim along with other weapons. Savoie was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and was transferred to the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail where he was booked. If convicted, he faces up to a $10,000 fine and/or up to 10 years in prison. Louisiana state law requires motorists to keep right except to pass on controlled access multilane highways. Failure to obey the law and to drive courteously can lead to road rage incidents like the one this morning. Contact Information: Sgt.
