TROOP A NEWS RELEASE January 15, 2015 18 Year Old Driver Killed in East Feliciana Parish Crash Jackson – Shortly before 6:45 am on January 15, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 964 north of LA Hwy 955 in East Feliciana Parish. The crash took the life of 18 year old Mekala B. Brooks of Baker, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Brooks was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Impala southbound on LA Hwy 964. At the same time, 47 year old Ricky P. Edwards of Independence, LA was driving a 2004 Chevrolet pickup northbound on LA Hwy 964. As Brooks approached a right hand curve, her Impala crossed the centerline and entered the northbound lane of travel. The Impala began sliding sideways, and upon doing so the Chevrolet struck the Impala on the driver’s side. Brooks was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was ejected from her vehicle. She suffered fatal injuries as a result. Despite the fact that he was properly restrained, Edwards was transported from the scene to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge with minor injuries. Impairment is not considered to be a factor; however, toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a motor vehicle crash rise significantly when properly restrained.
