TROOP D NEWS RELEASE September 27, 2017 Crash Involving Motorcycle Leads to Death of DeQuincy Man CALCASIEU PARISH — A DeQuincy man is dead following a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle this morning north of Sulphur. On September 27, 2017, shortly after 5:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on Louisiana Highway 27 at Jim Pickens Road in Calcasieu Parish. The initial investigation revealed a 2013 Dodge Journey driven by 24-year-old Gustavo Corpus of Weslaco, Texas, was traveling east on Jim Pickens Road. Corpus then entered LA 27 to make a turn and traveled into the path of a southbound 2007 Yamaha motorcycle operated by 24-year-old Steffan Russell Hardesty of DeQuincy. Hardesty, who was wearing an approved helmet, was transported from the scene with serious injuries and would later die as a result of those injuries. Corpus was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Corpus was charged with failure to yield at a stop sign and driving with a suspended driver’s license. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Troop D has investigated 19 fatal crashes resulting in 26 deaths in 2017. This is the third fatal crash involving a motorcycle investigated by Troop D this month. Contact Information: Sgt.
