Baton Rouge Teenager Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in EBR Parish Crash

Baton Rouge Shortly before 9:00 pm on February 3, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle serious injury crash that occurred on LA Hwy 37 at Monticello Blvd. in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 17 year old Khalil D. Hawkins of Baton Rouge.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 25 year old Lawrence G. Bottoms of Greenwell Springs was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer northbound on LA Hwy 37. At the same time, Hawkins was driving a 2008 Honda Civic westbound on Monticello Blvd. As both vehicles approached the intersection, both drivers disregarded the traffic control device and continued through the intersection on a red light. As a result the Chevrolet struck the Honda on the driver’s side.

Hawkins sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. He was transported from the scene to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. At approximately 10:00 am on February 7, 2015, while at OLOL Hawkins succumbed to injuries received in the crash. It is unknown at this time if Hawkins was properly restrained at the time of the crash. Impairment on his part is unknown at this time, and a toxicology sample was taken from him and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Bottoms was properly restrained and suffered only minor injuries as a result of the crash. Driver impairment is not suspected on his part. Bottoms was initially cited for LRS 32:232 – Traffic-control signals. This crash remains under investigation, and further charges may be pending.

Troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving at all times. Never drive a motor vehicle when impaired or fatigued, and always remain buckled up regardless of seating position. Avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road. Always obey all traffic control devices and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
