| TROOP D NEWS RELEASE October 15, 2016 Unrestrained Longville Man Dies in Rollover Crash GILLIS, LA – A Longville man died this morning following a single-vehicle crash in the community of Gillis. On October 15, 2016, shortly after 5:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on US Highway 171 at its intersection with Topsy Road in northern Calcasieu Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Toyota Tundra was traveling north on US 171 when the pickup, driven by 22-year-old Cody Cormier of Longville, traveled off the road to the right and struck a traffic light support pole. The vehicle continued into a ditch where it rolled over and flipped end over end. Cormier, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and transported to a hospital in Lake Charles where he was pronounced dead. There were no other occupants in the vehicle. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Cormier and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Cormier was employed as a deputy with the Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office. He was driving a personal vehicle and was off-duty at the time of the crash. Seat belts prevent drivers and passengers from being ejected during a crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, people not wearing a seat belt are 30 times more likely to be ejected from a vehicle during a crash. Additionally, more than 3 out of 4 people who are ejected during a crash die from their injuries. Troop D has investigated 28 fatal crashes resulting in 32 deaths this year.
