TROOP D NEWS RELEASE September 8, 2016 Excessive Speed Leads to Deadly Crash on US 165 FENTON, LA – A Basile man died last night as the result of a single-vehicle crash on US 165 in Jefferson Davis Parish. On September 7, 2016, shortly before 5:00 p.m., Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on US 165 south of Fenton. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac driven by 53-year-old Glynn LaFleur of Basile was traveling north on US 165 at a high rate of speed. LaFleur approached another vehicle from behind and swerved to the right to avoid a collision. The vehicle LaFleur was driving traveled over 300 feet along the ditch then traveled nearly 200 additional feet on the roadway as he lost control. The vehicle then struck a sign in the median and rolled over several times. LaFleur was seriously injured despite wearing a seat belt and was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Lafayette where he was later pronounced dead. No one else was in the vehicle. Excessive speed is suspected to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway. Speeding also extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle and can lead to a more serious collision in cases where the vehicle strikes another object. Troopers encourage motorists to observe the speed limit and to drive at a speed that is safe for prevailing road and weather conditions. Troop D has investigated 24 fatal crashes resulting in 28 deaths this year. Contact Information: | |||
