TROOP A NEWS RELEASE February 13, 2015 Unrestrained Baton Rouge Man Killed in Livingston Parish Crash Livingston – At approximately 8:30 pm on February 12, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 63 south of LA Hwy 449 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 55 year old Louis L. Gurka, III of Baton Rouge. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Gurka was driving a 2002 GMC Yukon northbound on LA Hwy 63. For unknown reasons the vehicle ran off the roadway to the right. Upon doing so the vehicle struck a culvert and became airborne. The GMC then landed on its front bumper and rolled over several times. Gurka was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported from the scene by Air Med to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge were he succumbed to his injuries. Driver impairment may have been a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was taken from Gurka and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle to always remain buckled up, regardless of seating position. Contact Information: | |||
