TROOP D NEWS RELEASE June 17, 2016 Motorcyclist Dies in Calcasieu Parish Crash CARLYSS, LA – A motorcyclist has died after a two-vehicle crash south of Sulphur. On June 17, 2016, shortly after 5:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on Louisiana Highway 27 near Sam Vincent Road in Calcasieu Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by 46-year-old David Butts of Sulphur was traveling south on LA 27 behind a 2015 Ram pickup truck driven by 26-year-old Elijah McComb of Ragley which was also traveling south. Butts began to pass the pickup as McComb attempted to turn left into a private driveway. The motorcycle then struck the left side of the pickup causing Butts to be ejected. Butts was transported to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries. He was wearing an approved helmet at the time of the crash. McComb was not injured. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles and are often more difficult to see. Drivers are asked to always watch for motorcycles. Troop D has investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 22 deaths this year including 7 fatalities on Louisiana Highway 27 in Calcasieu Parish. | |||
