Lake Charles Police Officer Receives Minor Injuries after Vehicle Turns in Front of Him

CALCASIEU PARISH, LA – A Lake Charles Police Officer received minor injuries this morning as the result of a two-vehicle crash.

On December 13, 2016, shortly before 9:30 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 397 at Louisiana Highway 3020 near I-10 in Calcasieu Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2009 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by 19-year-old Andrew Machek, Jr. of Leesville, LA was traveling north on LA 397 when Machek made a left turn into the path of a 2014 Dodge Charger traveling south on LA 397.

The Charger is a Lake Charles City Police vehicle driven by Corporal Gary Benoit of the Lake Charles City Police Department. The Charger overturned several times before coming to rest on the driver’s side, trapping Corporal Benoit in the vehicle. A Good Samaritan rendered aid at the scene until first responders arrived.

Corporal Benoit sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for treatment and was later released. Machek was not injured and was issued a citation for failure to yield while making a left turn at an intersection. The crash remains under investigation.
