TROOP D NEWS RELEASE March 15, 2017 DeQuincy Man Dies in Head-On Crash in Calcasieu Parish SULPHUR, LA – One person is dead following a two-vehicle crash this morning on Louisiana Highway 27 north of Sulphur. On March 15, 2017, shortly after 6:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a head-on crash involving two vehicles on Louisiana Highway 27 at Barney Hoffpauir Road about ½ mile north of Sulphur. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 Nissan Sentra driven by 38-year-old Jesse Warren Touchet of DeQuincy was traveling north on LA 27 when, for unknown reasons, the Sentra crossed the center line and traveled across the center turn lane. The Sentra then collided head-on with a 2015 GMC Sierra driven by 65-year-old Murrell Koonce, Jr. of Sulphur that was traveling south in the inside lane. Touchet was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office. Koonce received minor injuries. Both men were wearing a seat belt. While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reports 846 fatalities (2.6% of all fatalities) across our country were drowsy-driving-related in 2014. The best countermeasure to drowsy driving is to get enough rest on a daily basis. Toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Troop D has investigated 5 fatal crashes resulting in 8 deaths in 2017. Contact Information: | |||
