Troopers Arrest Mississippi Man for Sixth DWI

CALCASIEU PARISH, LA—Troopers arrested a Mississippi man for his sixth DWI this morning after he was found sleeping in a vehicle along I-10 in Calcasieu Parish.
On Monday, March 27, 2017, at about 9:30 a.m., a Trooper assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop D observed a gold Honda Accord parked on the north emergency shoulder of I-10 Westbound about 3 miles east of Vinton with no hazard lights on. The Trooper stopped to check on the vehicle and noticed the driver sleeping with the key in the ignition and an open alcoholic beverage in the center console.

The Trooper woke the driver, 33-year-old Darrell Lee Gaddis, Jr. of Petal, Mississippi, and asked him to exit the vehicle. Gaddis stated he was not sure where he was or how he got there and that he was too drunk to drive. Gaddis performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests and was transported to Troop D for a chemical test.

At Troop D, Gaddis provided a breath sample showing his blood alcohol content was over 2 ½ times the legal limit. A check of his criminal history showed five previous DWI arrests, all in Mississippi.

Gaddis was charged with DWI fourth offense (the maximum under Louisiana law), parking upon a highway shoulder, switched license plate, and open alcoholic beverage container. He was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center.
