TROOP D NEWS RELEASE UPDATE March 31, 2017 Update to Fatal Jefferson Davis Parish Crash JEFFERSON DAVIS PARISH, LA—Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a fatal crash that occurred in Jefferson Davis Parish on March 1, 2016. The results of the preliminary investigation were forwarded to Public Affairs and a news release was issued. Recently, a relative of one of the individuals involved in the crash brought it to the attention of Public Affairs that the conclusion of the final crash report differed from the initial findings provided in the news release. In the final report, investigators determined a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup driven by 28-year-old Trent Wayne Gary of Jennings was traveling west on Bryan Road when Gary disregarded a stop sign. The Dodge Ram then collided with a 2003 Saturn Ion traveling north on Louisiana Highway 395. The Saturn was driven by 24-year-old Kayla N. Laborde of Elton. Investigators determined Laborde had the right-of-way. The final conclusion was reached after a Louisiana State Police crash reconstruction team studied the crash scene during daylight hours shortly after the preliminary investigation. Gary was charged with failure to yield at a stop sign, no seat belt, and no license plate. Laborde was charged with driving under suspension and failure to properly secure a child seat. At the time of the crash a toxicology sample was obtained from each of the drivers. The test results indicated no alcohol or drug use at the time of the crash. TROOP D NEWS RELEASE March 2, 2016 Jefferson Davis Parish Crash Leads to Death and Serious Injury of Unrestrained Occupants JEFFERSON DAVIS PARISH, LA – One person was killed and three others were injured after a two-vehicle crash near the community of Roanoke last night. On March 1, 2016, at 8:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Bryan Road and Louisiana Highway 395. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2003 Saturn Ion driven by 24-year-old Kayla N. Laborde of Elton was traveling east on Bryan Road and failed to stop at a stop sign at LA 395 for unknown reasons. A 2008 Dodge Ram pickup driven by 28-year-old Trent Wayne Gary of Jennings was traveling north on LA 395 and struck the Saturn as it entered the intersection. A passenger in the Saturn, 25-year-old Kevin J. Daigle of Elton, was ejected and transported to a Lafayette hospital where he later died. Laborde was transported from the scene with serious injuries. Gary was ejected 85 feet from the pickup he was driving and was transported from the scene with serious injuries. None of them were wearing a seat belt. A two-year-old in the Saturn was restrained and received moderate injuries. Toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. Louisiana law requires motorists to wear a seat belt in every seating position, front seat and back seat, day and night. While every crash is not survivable, wearing a seat belt is the most effective thing vehicle occupants can do to minimize the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to make the smart choice and to always wear their seat belt. | |||
