TROOP A NEWS RELEASE
February 22, 2015
Unrestrained Driver Killed in East Baton Rouge Parish Crash

Greenwell Springs At approximately 7:45 am on February 22, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 37 (Greenwell Springs Rd.) at Pride-Baywood Rd. in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 40 year old Lawrence E. Clay, Jr. of Baton Rouge.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Clay was driving a 2003 Dodge Ram northbound on LA Hwy 37. As Clay entered a left hand curve, the Dodge ran off the roadway to the right. After leaving the roadway the vehicle entered a ditch and struck a driveway embankment. The Dodge then struck a tree before coming to rest upside down in the ditch.

Clay was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries sustained. Driver impairment is unknown at this time, and a toxicology sample was taken from Clay and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Excessive speed may have been a factor in the crash.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle to always remain buckled up, regardless of seating position.
