Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: April 25, 2011 Fatal Crash Claimed The Life Of An Eleven Year-Old Female From Morgan City, LA Assumption- On Monday, April 25, 2011, at approximately 4:18 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a fatal crash on LA 662 near Tuboscope in Bayou Lourse’, LA. The crash claimed the life of an eleven year-old female from Morgan City, LA. Shaye Toups (W/M, 29 of Bayou Lourse’, LA) was operating a 2006 GMC pickup northbound on LA 662 and for unknown reasons, Toups struck the rear of a stopped northbound 2006 Mazda MZ6 being driven by Kelly Wiggins (W/F, 33 of Morgan City, LA). Wiggins was stopped behind a 2005 Honda Accord being driven by Wihelmina Thomas (B/F, 50 of Thibodaux, LA). Thomas was stopped to make a left turn into a private drive. After Toups struck Kelly Wiggins’ vehicle, it caused a chain reaction and Kelly Wiggins’ vehicle struck the Thomas vehicle. Toups received minor injuries and refused medical attention. Kelly Wiggins received minor injuries and was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center in Thibodaux, LA. Wiggins’ left rear passenger, Jade Wiggins (W/F, 11 of Morgan City, LA) received critical injuries and was transported to the Teche Regional Hospital in Morgan City, LA. Jade Wiggins was later transferred to University Hospital in New Orleans, LA where she later died from injuries received in the crash. Kelly Wiggins’ right rear passenger, Jamie Wiggins Jr. (W/M, 5 of Morgan City, LA) received moderate injuries and was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. Thomas received minor injuries and was transported to the Teche Regional Hospital. Seat belts were not used by Toups, but were used by all occupants in the Wiggins and Thomas vehicles. Alcohol and drug usage is not suspected in the crash. Blood was drawn as per state law from Wiggins and Thomas and toxicology results are pending from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Toups was administered a breath test which indicated no detectable alcohol found. Charges are pending as Troopers continue their investigation. REMEMBER, Louisiana state law requires ALL occupants to be properly restrained in a vehicle. Please pay attention when driving and keep your mind on the driving task!!!!!!
