Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release April 22, 2011 Single Vehicle Crash Involving Hazardous Material in St. John Parish Edgard- On Thursday, April 21, 2011, at approximately 6:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop C with the assistance of the St. James and St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office closed LA 3127 at LA 3213 and LA 640 to investigate a single vehicle crash on LA 3127 1.4 miles west of LA 640. The crash involved a 2004 International flat-bed carrying hydrochloric acid and hydrochloric solutions used for pool supplies. John Tamburell (W/M, 59 of Norco, LA) was operating a 2004 International flat-bed belonging to Pool Sure of Luling, LA. Tamburell was westbound on LA 3127 and for unknown reasons ran off of the roadway to right and over-corrected which caused the weight of the load too shift, causing the truck to roll over and come to rest on the driver’s side. The load contained approximately 1,300 gallons of hydrochloric solution, 150 gallons of hydrochloric acid, and 12 cylinders of Co2 at the time of the crash. Approximately 1,400 gallons of product was released. Eagle Environmental performed the cleanup. Troop C was assisted by the Louisiana State Police Emergency Services Section with the investigation. The roadway was closed at approximately 6:00 a.m. and re-opened at 6:15 p.m. Tamburell was wearing his seat belt and received moderate to serious injuries. Tamburell was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans, LA. Alcohol and/or drug usage is not suspected in the crash. Blood was drawn as per state law and toxicology results are pending from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Tamburell was charged with Improper Lane Usage and Careless Handling of Hazardous Material. Troopers are continuing their investigation.
