Louisiana State Police Reminds Drivers To Be Safe This Holiday Weekend

Houma-As the Easter holiday and spring break approaches Louisiana State Police Troop C wants to remind drivers the importance of safe driving and proper restraint use for occupants of motor vehicles.

If you plan on traveling this holiday weekend state police encourages you to drive safely and plan your trip accordingly. Drivers are encouraged to check their vehicles fluid levels, tires, and other required vehicle equipment to make sure they can make it to their destination safely. Make sure you plan for delays on your route and if you need to find out about road closures you may call 511 for information. As you drive to and from your destination troopers want to remind drivers to minimize their distractions in the vehicle. Louisiana state law prohibits ALL drivers from texting and also prohibits drivers under the age of 18 from using a cell phone while driving. Drivers age 18 and older are encouraged to pull to a safe location if there is a need to use their cell phone. The shoulder of a roadway is not a safe place to use your cell phone.

If you plan on consuming alcohol have a designated driver. If planning a long trip get proper rest and take ample breaks while driving. Louisiana state law requires ALL occupants in a motor vehicle to be properly restrained. Children must be restrained in the proper seat to accommodate age, weight, height, and any special needs required for that child. Make sure everyone is properly restrained before the vehicle moves. More information on child safety seats can be obtained at www.lsp.org.

While traveling, should your vehicle experience a problem requiring you to pull off the road, you may call *LSP (*577) and state police can help assist in finding the appropriate help. Drivers are reminded not to pull onto the left shoulder of any road, or stop in the roadway. Pull to the right shoulder or to a safe location. * LSP (*577) can also be used if you should encounter unsafe driving.

“Holidays are times to enjoy and spend time with family and friends,” said Captain Darrin Naquin, Commander Troop C. “Be responsible and plan, make this a safe and happy holiday weekend,” added Captain Naquin.
