TROOP A- NEWS RELEASE April 10, 2015 Pedestrian Struck and Killed on Airline Hwy. in Ascension Parish Update - The pedestrian was identified as 77 year-old James Grant of Baton Rouge, La. Gonzales – Shortly before 8:00 pm on April 9, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred on US Hwy 61 (Airline Hwy.) south of LA Hwy 74 in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of a pedestrian, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification. At the same time, 56 year old Rodney Marchand of Baton Rouge was driving a 2011 Ford Escape northbound on US Hwy 61. As the pedestrian attempted to walk across the lanes of US Hwy 61 he was struck by the northbound Ford. The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment on his part is unknown at this time, and a toxicology sample was taken from him and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Marchand was properly restrained and received only minor injuries. Impairment on his part is not suspected, and he was not cited in the crash. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians. Contact Information: | |||
